Prosthodontics is a dental specialty that helps in treating certain clinical conditions like oral and maxillofacial tissues, missing or deficient teeth. Prosthodontists diagnose, make a treatment plan, rehabilitate, and maintain patients’ oral health and function. The term “prostho” denotes replacement; hence, prosthodontists are experts who deal with anything needed to be replaced in your mouth. It can be for the replacement of a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth and gums as well.

Prosthodontists get advanced training to restore and replace teeth and are also considered to be the leaders of the dental treatment plan. They even lead the teams of general dentists, specialists, and other health professionals regularly, to determine solutions for some dental issues.

What are the services involved in prosthodontics?

The treatments usually provided by a prosthodontist includes:
Porcelain Veneers: Porcelain veneers are wafer-thin shells that are made of ceramic material to cover the front surfaces of teeth, to give a dramatic change in its look. A small amount of enamel is removed before placing them, or else it might appear too bulky.
Crowns: Crowns are artificial covers or “caps,” which helps in replacing the entire visible portion of a tooth above the gum line. Crowns are placed after preparing the tooth with intact roots.
Dental Implants: If you want to get both roots and crown replaced, then dental implants are best for you. Implants are titanium metal posts that are placed in the jaw surgically. The post gets fused with the jaw bone and gives a solid anchorage to place a lifelike crown.
Fixed Bridges: In this procedure, the existing, healthy teeth on either side of a gap provide support to one or more artificial teeth. The gap in the teeth may be due to extraction or some other reason. They act as a roadway-bridge foundation to hold the crowns in place.
Dentures: Dentures are of many types, like full, partial, and implant-supported. They replace the missing teeth using a gadget or a removable prosthetic device. It has a gum-colored base which helps in holding the artificial teeth in place. They can help in improving the functionality and aesthetics of a person.
