Dental problems are almost unavoidable even for people who practice proper dental care. For this reason, scientists have developed dental solutions like same day crowns to deal with dental imperfections.
Over time, teeth become vulnerable to various dental problems. Bacterial activity on teeth is the leading cause of dental problems. However, other factors could lead to teeth breaking, chipping or cracking.
What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-like cap that is placed on a damaged, chipped, cracked or decayed tooth to improve its appearance and at the same time, restore the patient’s oral health. Same day crowns are basically imitations of the patient’s original teeth, which are milled using CEREC technology to ensure a proper fit. Dentists use the CEREC Omnicam to take the measurements of a tooth. The details are uploaded to a CEREC computer that generates a 3D image of the crown.
Using a milling machine, the prosthetic is created while the patient waits. Upon completion, the dentist prepares the affected tooth by removing portions of the enamel. This makes it easy for them to fit the crown securely on the tooth and avoids the disturbance of adjacent teeth. Since the whole process of milling the crown and fitting it on the tooth takes place in one appointment, the name “same day crowns” was derived.
Do same day crowns last?
Dental crowns require regular oral hygiene like natural teeth. This is because the natural teeth beneath the crown can be affected if oral hygiene is not observed. On average, same day crowns last between five to 15 years depending on how well they are maintained.
The most common problem with crowns is the formation of cavities on the natural teeth underneath the crown. Dentists recommend brushing twice a day, flossing daily and scheduling regular check-ups with a dentist.
Uses of dental crowns
A dental crown is a protective cover used to protect a damaged or disfigured tooth. Dentists use same day crowns to restore teeth that have broken, cracked, decayed or been damaged by filling. Dentists often cover teeth that have been restored with root canal treatments with crowns.
Crowns can be made from a wide range of materials like porcelain and ceramics, and these devices can endure a great deal of pressure when chewing food. Dental crowns have also gained popularity due to their cosmetic value and the beauty they bring to patients with twisted and discolored teeth.
Benefits of same day crowns
- Dental crowns can be used to protect a damaged tooth, preventing further degradation of the other teeth
- Crowns are often used to restore broken and misshapen teeth, thus building the patient’s confidence
- Dental crowns are often milled from porcelain or ceramics that have the same color properties as natural teeth; the materials used to make crowns are also durable and can easily withstand acids in the mouth and pressure
- Same day crowns are convenient, since they can be prepared and applied during a single appointment
